The Hottest Future-Proof Job

When you were a kid what profession did you think was an attainable, realistic job that made a lot of money that was always going to be there? For me it was: doctor, lawyer, dentist or psychiatrist. Professions that would take years of schooling, dedication and deep specialization. I think I dropped out of bio-101 about 3 weeks into the class. So good bye doctor, good bye dentist. Life isn’t always about money. But money provides freedom or at a minimum, the ability to live without worrying too much about bills.

So I focused a bit on happiness. What jobs would give me good work-life balance? What would I enjoy doing? How did I want to spend my time? Goodbye law.

Somehow I stumbled into the most rewarding, challenging, balanced and financially free profession: Sales Engineering. Don’t believe me that it is the hottest job? This is my inbox in the last month:

What is Sales Engineering?

A Sales Engineer (SE) is a problem-solver, a translator, and a trusted advisor. SEs work alongside sales teams to explain the technical side of products in a way customers can understand. You don’t need to build the product — you just need to understand it well enough to show others how it solves their problems.

In the most basic example: how many times have you explained to your parents or grandparents what Facetime is? Or how to upload something to Google Drive? Maybe even explain why Instagram is so popular.

If you can explain any or all those concepts in a way that the audience I outlined (old people) would understand — you could make a great Sales Engineer.

In short: you’re the bridge between people and technology.

Why is Sales Engineering Future Proof?

In order to be future proof, there needs to be sustainable demand to a point that it is a requirement of modern society. Folks, I hate to say it, but technology is around to stay. We are seeing Moore’s Law in affect day over day, month over month and year over year. Technology is being developed faster than ever and more powerful than ever.

Sales Engineering is future proof because:

  • High Demand: As more companies offer software and tech solutions, they need skilled SEs to guide customers through buying decisions.

  • No Coding Required: While technical understanding is important, you don’t need to be a software engineer. Communication and problem-solving are your top assets.

Bottom line: If you enjoy helping people, solving problems, and learning about technology, Sales Engineering is one of the most accessible, rewarding paths into the tech world — no coding bootcamp required.

How Do I Get Into Sales Engineering?

Start today. The skills it take to be a great SE can easily be attained through finding the type of technology you enjoy. Is it mobile apps? Data?

  • Learn the Lingo: “Hey ChatGPT — what are some specific sales engineering phrases I should understand”. Its that simple. Understand what’s called what. The difference between this and that. How to communicate effectively.

  • Learn the Skills: If its technology related: use ChatGPT to help you understand the tech. Read the technical docs. Watch some Youtube videos about the tech. Understand how it works.

  • Let Me Help You: I’ve been there. My undergraduate degree is in Russian. My first job was a glorified phone rep. If I can do this, so can you. Check out SalesEngineeringGuide.com.

If you dedicate just 1 hour a week towards these skills, you’d be impressed how far you can get in such a short period of time. Most of the skills required to be a great SE — you all ready have!

What Makes Sales Engineering So Great?

I’ve worked in finance, I’ve worked in consulting, I’ve even worked in the services industry, but why do I love working in tech?

  • Excellent Pay: Entry-level Sales Engineers can earn $150K–$200K/year, with many professionals exceeding six figures with experience, commissions and even equity.

  • Career Growth: SEs often move into leadership, product management, or even founding startups.

  • Work-Life Balance: SEs have flexibility in their day between meetings, down-time to work on demos or content. Most SEs are 100% remote or at minimum have a hybrid schedule.

  • Travel: SEs often have to go on-site to their prospects, customers or partners. Travel isn’t always on people’s “must haves” for work, but in my experience its been a free, interesting way to see different parts of the country and world.

It’s been the perfect balance of great pay, growth and freedom.

Imagine being one of the first Sales Engineers for Google? You’d be pretty well off in 2025. (Not every company will be a Google).

Conclusion:

This profession is around to stay and only going to become that much more important as tech continues to evolve and grow.

The skills required to become a Sales Engineer are right there for the taking.

You make great money, you have work-life balance and a possibility to grow.
